You need to see if the door moves when you change the heat/cold setting. Don't try to force the door with your hand. I don't know if you can see it without the ECM removed, so make sure you're looking at the right door. The door is controlled by a motor with a plastic rod, so I'm not sure if you're looking at the right thing.

As far as the refrigerant, never mix r12 with anything. Here is a site with a little info on alternative refrigerants:
