Something is amiss.

the black smoke tells me something is running rich. A bad cat won't automatically cause black smoke to puke out, that is just not gonna happen.

I think you need to find a new shop. They don't seem to understand modern engine technology, if they did, this would not be their recommendation.

You need to invest in a copy of the Helm Factory Service manual, www.helminc.com, and get to reading. The answer will be in there.

Any engine codes? The light on the DIC (above the AC controls) called Service Engine Soon will turn on. Also, when you start the car, does that light come on? It should come on at start.
