There are two o-rings that could cause binding. Be sure the splines are clean in the coupler. The o-rings will be on the shaft out of the timing cover and on the waterpump. Be sure you have them greased, and the coupler will slide on. I believe the groove on the coupler goes towards the engine. As 95vette stated there isn't an alignment spline.
