Hm... red cased transmission? they came in natural metal colour from the factory. I wonder if it was powder coated or something. The big difference is the colour of the tag on the transmission. If this was a manual, it would be blue; earlier were black. The black tagged 6spds were made in West Germany, the blue tags in Alabama.

As for the engine/vin... I encountered the same thing. I expected a 2nd set of numbers just off the right side block deck... nada... now, there is a place on the side of the block near the oil filter... check there, if you can.

Can't help with PKE... it's a fussy little beotch.
