There are three seals that install on the timing chain cover:

Water pump shaft seal
Optispark shaft seal
Front crankshaft seal

They can all be replaced without removing the timing chain cover, and the seals themselves are inexpensive. The water pump seal cost $6.95 from my local Chevy parts department. Takes a couple of minutes to remove the old one and install the new one.

Of course I damaged the first one I tried to install, so it cost me twice that, but that's another story ...
