I was wondering about doing that to my 91's exhaust manifold until I can afford to buy headers. What problems do you run into when not running the heat shields? Do you have extra insulation on the plug wires that are near these manifolds?

For the time, effort and funds to coat the manifolds I wouldn't do it if you are planning to put headers on in the near future. As far as heat, this coating is rated to 1300 F and are coated inside and out which drops the manifold temp from 400-300 degress cooler than uncoated manifolds. The heat shields only cover the sides and warm air rises. So they don't do much for protecting wires to begin with. I will not know if it has any adverse effects until I start doing longer runs in the spring. I have standard 8.5 mm silicone wires and don't figure there to be any problems. You can almost put your hand on the manifolds while it is running. The ceramic coating channels most of the heat right out the exhaust.
