After seeing the pictures from your previous mess, we went ahead and put the rev limiter at 6000.
Now he uses it sort of as a feature and loves it. He puts his automatic in 2 gear and rides it up to 6000, after hitting the rev limiter he shifts manually into 3rd.
Now he can have his eyes on the road and doesn't need to worry about the revs anymore. Like I said, he loves it.
