going to order a new egr since it looks like this and it is a pain to get to. Any suggestions on a brand or does it matter??????

I suggest an OEM AC Delco unit. I replaced the EGR with a cheap, parts store brand on a suburban not too long ago and the valve simply wasn't good enough. (barely improved emissions test results and still failed). Replaced that EGR with an OEM unit (which cost 3X more than the cheap one) and it passed easily.
