You can just "bump" the motor over. I use a similar one all the time when I have to adjust valves in the car. Besides it's not good practice to turn the engine over using the balancer bolt... espc with the plugs in.

The rest sounds like a good plan. Give it a little run time and see if it's getting oil. If it's getting oil but still noisey - then with the engine running play with the pre load a little... if you can't get it to quiet down... you know you got to replace it.
