The oil level sensor was put there more for the idiots who never open the hood than for oil loss.

Personally, I'd do away with it.

You could cover yourself by putting in an oil pressure warning light. You can get an adjustable sensor and tee it into the oil press line.
And you can fab an LED into the dash (even w/o cutting/drilling) that would be almost invisible until it came on. Or have a plug in alert light just used at events.
