I measured the voltage output of the VSS when I removed it to check that the driven gear wasn't broken. The VSS is basically a magnet and a coil so when I spun the VSS by hand and had a voltmeter across the terminals a voltage was generated. Not sure if that is the correct way of doing things, but it made since to me at the time.
