I've done it three times (twice on my '93 and once a friend's '87) and both times I wished I had pulled the motor, although the '87 was MUCH easier than the LT1. The front of the pan hits the front main studs no matter what. Then, once the pan is in place, it will take you two hours and you will fill your swear jar trying to get the gasket in there properly. You can not slide the pan up into place with the gasket on it, you will knock it off the front of the pan. It must go in after the fact and your fingers spend a LOT of time in between the frame and the block. Every second of that process made me nervous about my harbor freight engine hoist dropping the engine on my fingers and removing them... Even with jacking the front of the motor up it is a major PITA. At the very least you have to remove the whole passenger side of the motor (header, starter) to get to the bolts on that side between the wing and the block. They can not be reached from the bottom as the wing is in the way. If you use the stock oil pan rails you won't have issues with the nuts. |
