If it's like my 85 (with OD on DIC) the 4+3 ecm take a few different inputs to determine whether to activate overdrive, and the ecm directly controls that light. The shift light would have to be the same way based on gear switch inputs. So fake the inputs or disconnect the ECM outputs. They don't influence anything else.
