the shifter itself can wear... so you might be getting some of that.

A loose c-beam, in this case, would cause a side to side rocking. The c-beam is mounted to the side the transmission, and bolted up vertically.

If it goes loose, the first symptom is a side to side rocking. If it's REALLY loose, then it would result in the up down motion you are expecting. But if it was that loose, there would be all sorts of wacky sounds and clunks.
