Subject: Re: Two Newbie Questions About Coolant by CentralCoaster on 2013/9/27 4:22:43 Yeah that TB coolant connection is a stupid thing. The coolant in the TB is trapped above the thermostat which can be fairly water tight, but I guess it should drain back into the heater line for the most part. If you don't want any running down the front of the motor then have a shop vac nozzle right there as you loosen the hose. The 50/50 mix is a ripoff, costs almost the same as the 100% stuff! I've never found a car manufacturer to recommend distilled water, so if I forget to buy some, I just dillute with hose water. I always keep an extra coolant jug to mix it. If I was a yuppie with no garage space I guess I'd just get the 50/50. I also use the prestone yellow stuff so I can use it in any car. I've run it in a few dexcool cars as well, and over time there will be no red coolant left in them to worry about. Keeping different fluids for different cars is annoying. What Andy said about the water being the coolant is 100% true, I probably go more 60/40 ish. The chemicals in the coolant will make up for any shred of difference in distilled vs hose water. I bet the trace stuff left in the radiator is way more than whatever you gained by removing minerals from the water you're putting in. But go too little on coolant and you risk corrosion in your system, especially the heater core in long periods of non-use, and of course freezing. If someone is in a warm climate and wants some free coolant improvement, I recommend they run water wetter with 90% water. |
