I posed my question about cause of part deterioration before I learned it

eroded nipples?

Andy, was the coolant changed as required?

Note: I ordered the $8.00 part from RockAuto. At 84, I'm not concerned with
longevity.

The short answer is NO and it holding to almost 215k miles is amazing. Parts wear out due to both time and use. I have seen many low mile cars that without regular use that part will age equally as well. Then fail. Coolant quality certainly may have been a factor as well. GC
