Case, you are right about jsup not needing the heavy oil but Central Coaster is also right about it not causing jsup's problem. 5w30 is okay on a new or low mileage engine but as engines age they gain some clearance, also an engine built to perform above stock guidelines is built with more clearance so there is where the heavier oil comes into play. I used to race a 350 powered Vega and it was built to run so it had more clearance, I used straight 50 weight back then and NEVER lost an engine or scuffed a bearing. However, once when the oil pump pickup fell off the engine starved at 8000 rpm, damn, what a mess that was getting that 50 weight off the track.
