I run a similar sized SR cam (248/254 & 0.050", 0.670"+) in my 408CID on the street. While not for everyone, I find it to be quite streetable and makes plenty of down low (~2000 RPM) power to pull away from stationary. I do use shaft rockers, which may be helping to keep everything where it is supposed to be. The engine delivered 480+WHP in n/a form with 9.35SCR and AFR215CPs.

I have checked the lash many times, with it only needing adjustment once (actually twice if you consider after break-in, then after ~6 mos), and have had no need for adjustment in the last several years.
