Probably a combination of over spinning the motor and lack of lubrication. It seems to always be the #2 rod that goes.

Broken cranks are from guys thinking they can launch with 28" slicks with a 500+ hp motor on a cast crank. I've seen a few crank snouts broken too from large blowers.
