Diagnosing a vibration issue

Subject: Diagnosing a vibration issue
by djxib on 2009/1/12 17:16:05

So.. I recently noticed a strange behavior from the rear of the car when I 'get on it'. It's a kind of vibration, and almost feels as if the left rear tire is scrabbling for grip.

When it happens the rev limiter is pegged at 6000, so my theory is that I have some kind of wheelspin. However the ASR doesnt kick in (ASR seems to work fine if I'm aggressive on corners...).

Despite the problem the car accelerates well so I dont think I have a slipping clutch.

The only thing I can think of is that the rear tires are old now (replaced in spring 2002) and the rubber has gone hard - the tires only have 20k miles on them.

I am going to replace the tires and have a full wheel balance etc.. just wanted to see if you have any alternative theories.
