Update on the quest for 500RWHP

Subject: Update on the quest for 500RWHP
by rklessdriver on 2009/2/23 20:11:39

Well the little tinkering on my car came to a very, very bad end last week.

I swapped my 58mm TB out for an AS&M Mono Blade. I wanted to ge the car on a dyno - just to check the tune out. BUT due to moron actions by the local dyno shop close to me last time (I did a check out on my car) I was looking for a new guy... I was unable to get up with another local dyno and Ed being over 3hrs away in Suffolk I decided to take the car out for a little test drive as is...

Like I said, I really wanted to see how the car drove with the new TB so I took it out last Sunday early in the morning. While I was out playing around on an otherwise deserted hwy making easy 2nd gear pulls, I ended up getting in a race with the only car other car out that morning a modified STI (which the owner/driver said had over 450WHP). He said he heard me (and my car is pretty loud) out on the Parkway and decided to come see what I was driving... anyway I played around just putting a few cars on him in 1st and second gear from a roll. He seemed to think he'd do better the longer we ran so.... I ran it pretty hard one time just to let im know I really was playing around with him. 8+ cars by the top of 2nd gear (85mph) should have gotten the message across but I chose to run slam out of site on him in 3rd and 4th just be sure.... with the "message delived" and me feeling pretty good about how the car ran I decided to head home before I got my self in any legal trouble.

When I got back home with the car, it was blowing oil out the breather and dip stick. Massive positive crank case pressure. A partial compression test has 2 cyls down to under 100lbs... the plugs from those cyls are covered in alum as well... Looks like I have a few burned pistons to show for being stupid and not checking the tune after changing the TB.

My day job with the Govt has me working out of state the last week and this week. I've not had time to do anything more than think about how much money this is going to cost me...

After talking with dad and my brother, It looks like next month around spring break I'll be able to get the car down to my dads shop in GA and we'll go from there depending on how bad the block is screwed up. Hopefully this is a deal where it just torched the ring land and didn't do any damage to the bore. Of course I won't know for sure until we pull it apart.

If the bore isn't screwed I'm going to take the oportunity to bump the SCR from 10.6 to 11.6 as I can do that easily by moving from my current Wiesco's (20cc dish) to a Manley piston built for the CASCAR spec series (12cc dish). I'm going to leave the current hyd roller camshaft in it. This is obviously an exellant oportunity to fully port the intake manifold which I've been meaning to get around to but never have...

If the bore is screwed... I'm either going to have to spring for some custom pistons or find another block. I'd have to get with BRC (our normal custom piston supplier) for a price on pistons and see if it's more feasible than machining a different block to fit the Manley pistons.

Before anyone says it.

I KNOW I SHOULD NOT RACE ON THE STREET.

This is fitting however. I KNEW I should have checked the AF ratio on a dyno before making any real hard pulls with the car but I went against my better judgement and drove the car anyway...

So there you have it kids.

Don't race on the street. Don't drive your car around untuned and then decide to race it untuned. Don't let the fact that following both of these rules would have prevented me from destroying some clown with a Subaru dissuade you. Really it's just not worth it... Or maybe it is. I'll let you know when we have it apart and disect the damage.
