Battery Drain. The main purpose of the alternator is to "re-charge" the battery power that the electronics of your car uses. If your alternator is bad, it is not re-charging the battery at all or fast enough. a dead or low-charged battery will show low voltage. A car can actually run and be started a few times(or more) with no alternator output.

If the mechanic said it needed one, get one. If you want a second opinion, go somewhere else and see if they say the same thing.
