Nah. 4th applies the band, and normally lets it run cooler.
When shifting manually, it brings on another set of clutches, and activates a spag for more holding power. So, when you are beating on it, manual shifting is a good thing. When cruising, just let it work as normal, and temps will be cool.
What converter are you running?
When it comes out, be sure to check the end play.
