For what it is worth, this is my experience with the MAF. I have an 87 vert. that I installed a Jasper 383 stroker. Ran fine after a few bug killings. Then all of a sudden the engine ran bad (no code) and poured black smoke from the exhaust. Long story short, the MAF malfunctioned. Found it by unplugging sensor. Ordered a new one, installed and been running fine ever since. This was 6 months ago. I have scratched and sniffed to figure out why it did not set a code. Even discussed with my mech. which is very reliable. Hope this info helps.
