Unlike what some guys will suggest, you don't need a $2,000 stereo system! You can upgrade to a very nice system buying new parts for under $4-500 dollars. If you buy used, you can save even more. As far as brands for head units, I personally am a fan of pioneer. That's what I have. I like alpine for budget speakers although there are many more out there. Figure out what your intended uses are as well as your budget and we can go from there.
