Re: Thinking out loud..subwoofer enclosure idea

A sealed enclosure is always smaller than a vented box.

Sub manufacturers will generally recommend one type over the other AND recommend air space.

I typically like tight crisp bass so I build boxes a little bit smaller than the recommended sealed size, and add poly fill inside. This fools the sub into thinking it has more room than it does.

For instance. I have an 800 RMS watt 10" sub with 21mm of excursion...in a box with only .5 cubic feet of air space. The box takes up very little room yet the bass is crisp and clear and tight and will make your organs tingle.

ALWAYS match the RMS wattage handling of the sub to the RMS output of the amp. The amp can outdo the sub a little bit, but not the other way around.

Also, pick a sub that has a large Xmax, or excursion. This is the distance the cone travels while at full excursion. The larger the excursion, the better the low frequencies...bass.

There are other factors but typically when a sub manufacturer builds a sub with a high Xmax they are building a quality sub.

Cheap manufacturers have very low Xmax specs...10mm or lower.
