Re: Stereo Upgrade 2013!

Update:

I got the front stage fully working yesterday. I had a bad solder joint on the right door mid, so I fixed that.

The right side had also been an experiment in bi-amplification - the old 500/5 had 5 channels, 2x100, 2x25 and 1x250. A nice selection for a three-way front speaker setup and a single sub.

So I ran the front stage with the 2x100 for the mid and the mid-bass and the tweet was on the 25 watt rear channel, using a 24db slope to take some of the edge off, along with hpf and a high filter cut off. I should have put a choke on it to limit the range at about 4000hz, but I didn't. I also tuned it with the gain controls and the fader.

When the amp died a couple weeks back, it let off this scream... that scream took out the tweeter.

In phonics, or language, there is a term used to define words that start with the letter "S" or sound like the do. That word is "Sibilance".

It is also used to define how a tweeter should sound. If a tweeter reproduces the "S" sound without any distortion or harshness, that's good.

Right now, my poor little speaker sounds like the "S" is causing something the flap in the breeze. It's fluttering, and that is creating a coarseness in the sound quality.

If you have heard "S" sounds that are harsh or shrill coming from an audio system, it is one of 2 things, a bad source signal - super cheap shit audio will do this.

Very poor tuning (think concerts). Or a bad speaker.

In this case, the channel in the amp blew, took out the tweeter and that is about that.

As an aside, the Focal FPP-2100 sounds FABULOUS. I would highly recommend that amp. Clear (bad tweet notwithstanding) and excellent noise floor - very quiet amp. I am impressed.
