it needs the VSS? Wow.

The VSS is attached to the side of the tailshaft housing on the transmission.

I would suspect you can force a wire through the rubber grommet where the shift cable goes. I would drill a small hole off to the side, just to be sure it doesn't chaffe the wire.

It strikes me as the best place to pick up the signal from... otherwise, you are playing games with converted signals or what not.
