Pete - I'm interested in what type of connection you are recommending with the double flare? I have the tool and might consider that in the future if it's a better route. I still want to install a trans cooler.

I believe it's called a flare union. It is a hunk of brass, threaded at both ends (internally) to receive the male thread on each line end.
Very similar at first glance to the middle piece of a compression fitting.
It allows for a compression fitting, and is rock solid because of the double flare.
You sometimes see them on a brake line from the factory.
