Cus I'm sooooooooooooo busy, I took a piece of billet I had in the shop (didn't have any cast).
I hit one side with soda and the other with glass @105 psi.
Each was hit for about 10 seconds.

Soda just doesn't clean as well as glass (obviously).
Soda is great for paint removal and can be useful in "restoration" finishes where glass is more aggressive (but less than sand).
The glass left a nice finish on the aluminum.

But, you have to be careful with glass if you're going to paint it, too smooth and the paint won't adhere properly, self etching primer helps.
For p/c the surface can be smoother because the powder melts in.

Like Will said - hot soapy water wash (preferably with Dawn). I use Simple Green first and soapy water while the SG is still wet. Painted a bunch of cast alum this way.
