You mention the hairline cracks... that's been a problem since forever. My 76 pacer had that problem with the 258ci version of this engine. And yes, I hate the Torx bolts too... pain in the ass.

A little history... going backwards, the 4.0 litre is the end of the line, but prior, AMC had a 3.8 and 4.2 version, they came out in 1964 or so. Prior to that, there was a flat head and an OHV I-6 that dated back to post war, 1948, and were an improvement upon the original Nash I-6 from like 1925.

In short, that engine can be traced back over 80 years.
