Short of a highway car, think Caddy, Lincoln, Imperial, American cars were just brash... one trick ponies, really. But once Shelby turned the Mustang into a world beater, things slowly started to change. During the bad years (1974-1990), performance sucked, but chassis and brake development advanced rapidly, so that when power was back, the rest of the car could deal with it. Personally, I think we ARE living in the golden age of performance cars. Where else can you go to the dealer, buy a 600+ HP car, and be able drive it anywhere, without fear of overheating, getting 25-30 MPG highway and do with with all the creature comforts we have gotten used to having. |
