Wasn't the turbo 2.3l I-4 available? I know in the TBird that motor had a 5spd option.

It was the same used in the SVO Mustang ... 175hp! Pretty beefy back then ... but with some mods, 300-325 was easily attained!

The next gen TBird/Cougar had a supercharged V6 with a 5spd available. It was a nice motor, but had head gasket issues.

Ford kept the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe through the 1988 model year, by which time it was up to 190 bhp. Mercury never got that sporty with the Cougar—the Windsor 302 ci V8 was the top-of-the-line for the entire generation, though power climbed from 130 bhp in 1983 to 155 bhp in 1988. I think they knew their market.
