It reminds me of when I was a kid, every fall I'd go to every car dealer in town to look at all the new cars - there was something new and exciting to see every year. Quite different from today, where they seem to leak out new models barely distinguishable from one another all year long. Same here. It was a great fall ritual. I'd go with my dad to all of the local dealerships to see what was new. They'd always have free snacks like fresh cider and donuts. My dad had bought two cars in a row from the local Ford dealer, brand new '65 and '67 Mustangs. So when I was 14, he test drove a brand new 428 CJ 4-speed Torino, just so he could take it out in the country and let me drive it for awhile. They literally took it off of the showroom floor for him. He'd been teaching me how to and letting me drive since I was 11, so I was already a seasoned veteran by then. That Torino was pretty stout and he let me nail it and rip through the gears well into third gear. That was pretty damned cool. I finally got to return the favor by letting him drive the Vette now that he's in his eighties. He really enjoyed that. |
