I am serious when I say I don't understand how this could happen.

What you are looking at here is a sliding caliper. The dual piston side of the caliper has a pad that's been on there 10k or so, and looks brand new. On the other side.... the pad is down to metal. Both pads were obviously put on at the same time. How can this happen in a sliding caliper? It has to exert equal pressure because the caliper physically has to move. In any event, you would think the piston side would look worse, not the opposite side.
