Re: Headlight replacement covers

Well, after my trip to the 'city' today, I decided to try my hand at one of the lights. Pre-heated the oven to 350, while that was going, I disassembled the headlight. Threw it in the oven for 20 minutes, pulled it out and pried and pried trying to separate the lens from the case....to very little success. Back in the oven for another 20 minutes, this time the lens succumbed to my efforts. Then to fun part of digging out the old sealant...I was able to figure out the correct method... a small flat screwdriver just a hair narrower than the width of the groove and pulling tension on the sealant as you dig out the junk. Took me about 40 minutes and I lost about 5 lbs from sweating... and I was sitting in the AC cooled house while I was doing it....worked my arse off. Swapped the inner valance (colored part) to the new lens, laid in the new butyl sealant and heated to oven to 200* and threw the the case back in to heat the sealant for 15 minutes. Pulled out the case and stuck the lens back on...this is a real PITA to lne everything up and get it set down into the groove. As a matter of fact, I didn't get it down at the point...and didn't realize it until an hour later. So I took it out to the shop, and fired up my heat gun and warmed up that end and used some clamps to pull it completely down. 10 minutes later, clamps removed the lens is seated properly.

Now with this experience, I'm hoping that the second one will go better and easier.
