Re: Headlight replacement covers

Well, today I decided to do the other headlight. This time I had extra pair of hands, GS#3. First thing I did different was, left it in the oven about 5 minutes longer (25 as compared to 20 last time). Next thing, I had GS hold the headlight in his lap (with plenty of old towels under to buffer the heat). to hold it while I pried it open. Doing it this way saved about 15 minutes. The next thing was again, having GS hold on to the headlight as I dug the old sealant out...it was actually still warm so we were able to get it out in 5 pieces, the longest piece was about 16-18" long. Next we Pre-heated the oven to warm the new sealant up, setting the heat at 220 compared to 200 and left it in for 16 minutes compared to 10. The last thing was having 4 hands to line up the new lens and get it seated properly. The butyl stayed warm and pliable longer than before. AND I started at the lower, sharpest point of the lens putting it in first and working toward the 'fatter" end. Put a few clamps on just to hold it in place until the butyl cooled. Now it's just a matter of pulling the bumper and fender again, swapping the headlights. Oh, the second lens took an hour and a half compared to over three for the first one.
