When I installed them I put the clip on over the end of the ujoint and pressed it into place. I would go in a little, then release tension on the vise to see if the clip was ready to snap in, if not, then repeat.

I figured this way I only pressed it as much as needed for the clips to seat and no further. It was a very tight fit.
