Their helmet rules require a SA95 or newer helmet for all racers, and is probably moving up to SA2000 soon. I think it's related to the styrofoam or glue in the helmets aging and being less protective in a crash.
They also allow motorcycle helmets and non-SA helmets for first timers and passengers on a case-by-case basis.
As far as I know the main difference between a M (motorcycle) and SA (car) helmet is the SA is fire-rated so you can last a little longer inside a burning car.
Then there's cheaper DOT helmets, which are legal for riding motorcycles on the street and not much else, then there's a whole bunch of helmets that don't meet any standards at all.
There ya go, this is probably the rule for most organizations. Yep, SA's have Nomex liners and usually Kevlar chin straps. Ain't it funny that you can't wear a SA on the street?
