Onstar... big brother... and other random thoughts |
Subject: Onstar... big brother... and other random thoughts by bogus on 2011/9/23 7:01:17 I have read the threads regarding Onstar using data. I am very well aware of the legal issues surrounding the ownership of said data and its trial law implications. However... and it's not a big one, tho. If we had a true sense of faith in our system, we wouldn't necessarily object to this data being used to help others. The fear is that could be used to hose the owner. But it also brings me to another point... we keep trying to make the damned car safer, and do nothing to make the DRIVER safer. Better training and instruction, with real cars on real tracks would go a long way towards making drivers safer. Back to technology for a moment. I would feel better if GM viewed the data on the various computers as property of the cars owner. As such, only some raw elements of said data can be shared with the manufacturers, and, a court order is always required to get at the data in case of a legal issue. The reason for a court order? SELF INCRIMINATION. It makes the various tracking systems witnesses to your crime. Unwanted witnesses. Personally, I would prefer it if the data wasn't usable by anyone. But as technology marches on, we must come to terms with data capture. And be a little more comfortable with the concepts. This is NOT 1984. Far from it. The book showed a dystopian society, where free will has been eliminated and desire has gone away. |
