Yesterday, we bought 6 old oak chairs. 4 of them matched, and the other two were matches. Of the four, only 1 really needed much work, so this morning I took it completely apart, cleaned the joints, and re-glued it. The other two were in good shape structurally, but the finish really sucked. So I spent a couple hours per chair with lacquer thinner and steel wool dissolving the old finish.I like doing it this way compared to chemical strippers as the chemical strippers remove everything, including the stain. My method just dissolves the finish, leaving the stained wood behind. After doing the process, I take a clean rag with lacquer thinner and wipe it down, let it sit for a while to dry and spray a couple coats of clear lacquer on them. These two chairs had an upholstered seat, so I got into my stash of upholstery material and found some to re-do the pad seat. The chairs were almost black when I started and turned out like this. |
