That's why F1 drivers now have such extreme physical conditioning programs.

With the increase in car performance, the driver had to be in shape. Otherwise they are dead at the end of a race. As I understand it, from an article I read in Road & Track a bunch of years ago, a modern F1 drivers heart rate sustains at nearly 200 BPM for upwards of 90 minutes. Their cardio condition is beyond question. Parker Johnstone used to race IMSA back in the day, and his resting heart rate was about 40 BPM.
