Estimated loss of life the first day of the invasion on the American side was 200,000. His fighter squadron was expected to be in that loss column. I read the "letter" he had written to his family. He talked about the Bushido Warrior Code that he faced in the islands. The Japanese were relentless. The Atomic Bomb saved a lot of lives on both sides. I guess you would have be one of the grunts preparing yourself for death to appreciate what the bomb did. Estimated over 650,000 Sailors, Marines,Army and Allies would have died and that was a conservative estimate. |
