Subject: Re: Iowa boy HS wrestler forfeits, refuses to wrestle girl by bogus on 2011/2/19 23:44:07 I see this from a few different directions: 1. The boy would not be "beating" on a girl. This is a controlled sporting environment with rules and referees. 2. The girl has every right to compete in a given athletic event that she feels qualified to participate in. Women have been popping up in pro sports for a few years now; notibly, a woman who played goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightening. She was very good at prior levels and they wanted to try her out. Ok, she got shelled, but she did play. I give it another 10 years, and there will be women playing certian positions in the NFL, most likely kicker. I also see women breaking into the NHL, mostly as goalies. If they are capible, by all means. 3. Many of our gender rules are based on old school thinking; it is time to change that thinking. About the only place I worry about women participating is in ground combat. Especially since the opponents don't play nice. 4. The boy in this case has every right to forfiet. I just think his act was more cowardly than heroic. If he is that good, he should just have kicked her ass and moved on. |
