Today is NATIONAL ICE CREAM CONE DAY

National Ice Cream Cone Day is celebrated annually on September 22.

While there is some controversy as to who invented the ice cream cone, one of the earliest mentions of them showed up in French cook books around 1825. They were originally referred to as “little waffles” rolled into a cone shape.

Ice cream cones first became popular in the United States in the late 1800s. The earliest cones were rolled by hand. The ice cream cone made its debut at the World’s Fair in St. Louis in 1904. In 1912, an inventor from Oregon obtained a patent for a machine to make them. He sold his company to Nabisco in 1928 and they still make ice cream cones today.

The ice cream cone continues to be a popular treat for children and adults alike as more flavors of ice cream continue to be made available to please our palates.

NATIONAL WHITE CHOCOLATE DAY

National White Chocolate Day is celebrated annually on September 22.

White chocolate does not contain cocoa solids, so is not chocolate in the strictest sense. During the process of manufacturing chocolate, the dark-colored solid parts of the cocoa bean are separated from it’s fatty content, but unlike milk or dark chocolate, they are not reincorporated. As a result, white chocolate does not contain as much caffeine or antioxidants as it’s darker counterparts.

The first white chocolate bar was launched in Europe by Nestle. Today it is found in many forms, including liquid, liqueur, fudge, ganache, truffles and candy bars.

NATIONAL CENTENARIAN’S DAY

National Centenarian’s Day is celebrated annually on September 22.

National Centenarian’s Day is a day to honor those who are 100 years of age or older. The day was originally proclaimed as a time to listen to centenarian’s as they have so much rich history and wisdom to share. Nationally, a number of groups have been formed to honor our centenarian’s. Often, listening to their life stories proves the age-old saying that with age comes wisdom.

HOBBIT DAY

Hobbit Day is observed annually on September 22.

Hobbit Day is the birthday of the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, two fictional characters in J. R. R. Tolkien’s popular set of books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In the books both Bilbo and Frodo were said to be born on September 22, but of different years. Bilbo was born in the year of 2890 and Frodo in the year of 2968 in the Third Age (1290 and 1368 respectively in Shire-Reckoning.)

The American Tolkien Society first proclaimed Hobbit Day and Tolkien Week in 1978, and defines them as this: “Tolkien Week is observed as the calendar week containing September 22, which is always observed as Hobbit Day”, but acknowledges that Hobbit Day pre-dates their designation
