Good morning gang.

Same cold weather again today with some snow and wind thrown in for good measure. We started out at -6* and we should reach 20 but I'll believe it when I feel it.

For those of you that ski and in honor of Matt's little ski trip here are 9 Words to Help You Navigate the Slopes.

Word of the day is demassify.

Today is NATIONAL TORTILLA CHIP DAY

National Tortilla Chip Day, a day set aside for the crunchy snack loved by millions across the nation, is observed annually on February 24th. The tortilla chip is most commonly served with salsa, chile con queso, quacamole, cheese dips or other dips.

Tortilla chips are made from corn tortillas that have been cut into wedges and then fried. The corn tortillas have been made from corn, vegetable oil, salt and water. Typically made with yellow corn, they can also be made with white, blue or red corn also.

Even though tortilla chips have always been considered to be a Mexican food, known as tostados, they were first mass-produced in Los Angeles in the late 1940′s.

It is said that the triangle shaped tortilla chips were made popular by Rebecca Webb Carranza as a way to use the misshapen tortillas that were rejected from the automated tortilla manufacturing machine that she and her husband used at their Los Angeles. Carranza realized that once the discarded tortillas were cut into triangle shapes and fried, they became a popular snack. She then sold them for a dime a bag at the El Zarape Tortilla Factory. Carranza received the Golden Tortilla award in 1994, for her contribution to the Mexican food industry.

The United States is one of the main markets for tortilla chips.

An elaborate dish made with tortilla chips, that is known by all and loved by most, is nachos. The dish was first created around 1943 by Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya. Nachos are tortilla chips served with melted or shredded cheese and often times additional toppings are added such as; meat, salsa, refried beans, tomatoes, diced onion, lettuce, olives, jalapenos, guacamole and sour cream.

NATIONAL TORTILLA CHIP DAY HISTORY

Within our research, we were unable to find the creator and the origin of National Tortilla Chip Day, an “unofficial” national holiday.

SPAY DAY USA

The last Tuesday in February is the annual observance of Spay Day USA. This day was created by the Doris Day Animal League in 1994 as a day to bring attention to the pet overpopulation problem in the United States and also to encourage animal population control by neutering pets.

Spay Day USA has helped in decreasing the population of street dogs and cats throughout the United States which is helpful as it decreases the number of unwanted animals.
