Many years back I wanted to build a quilt rack in the mission style, but never found an original one from the era. So I took the liberty of using an original bookshelf as my starting point. Modified the ends so they could utilize three rails for the quilts to hang on. Incorporated traditional joinery (through mortise and tenon), to come up with the final design. Still have never seen an era example of one, but this would fit right in. The only thing wrong with this one is my choice of wood, this one is plain sawn red oak, where an original to the era would be quarter sawn white oak. 99% of the people would not know that though. I also want to show you the interior passage door I built. It is solid southern yellow pine. I built this because in order to get one in this size it would have to be custom ordered and built. If it has to be custom built, I may as well be the one custom building it. |
