Re: Charlotte and/or Raleigh, NC?

Well... from a pure geographic stand point, Myrtle Beach to DC is best done by taking the old 501 from MB to 95, then 95 to DC.

As far as sights? The only one I can think of is South of the Border!

Another option is taking old US17 up the coast to VaB and over to DC from there. Nice sights. Kitty Hawk is along that route.

Charlotte and Raleigh are rather far west.

If you do the 95 option, it's an easy 6 hour drive, IIRC. If you do want to stop, there are any number of good interchanges... Rocky Mount and Roanoke Rapids NC, or Emporia VA.

If you haven't noticed, I-95 is one long tourist trap. There are hotels, gas stations and fast food emporiums all along that stupid chunk of asphalt. Rocky Mount, I finally figured out, is about an 8-10 hour drive from the NY metro area... duh. 2500 rooms+... Roanoke Rapids is a little less nuts, and there is a newish Holiday Inn express about 2-3 miles south of the main interchanges. Emporia is about the same as RR, but about 20 miles north.

From Emporia to DC is about 3 hours, I would guess.
