Agreed that not everyone should go to college and that there is plenty of need for technical folks. My electrician (no college) is one of the smartest people I know.

As a counterfactual to "useless degrees," there's my father with a Ph.D in Philosophy who retired from the Navy as a Captain (O-6). Those skills developed working toward that Ph.D often translate nicely—he's never had any trouble getting a job.

QUITE SO. I FOUND A BS IN PSYCHOLOGY WAS USEFUL AS A PANZER LEADER, THOUGH I HAVE TO SAY I LEARNED MORE ABOUT LEADERSHIP AND COMMAND WATCHING MY DAD RUN A HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION CREW :-)
AND A MASTERS WAS THE ADMISSION TICKET TO VA EMPLOYMENT, BUT EVEN THEN MY JOB WAS AS MUCH LIKE AN ADMINISTRATIVE LAW JUDGE AS A PSYCHOLOGIST. COMMAND EXPERIENCE HELPED A LOT THERE.

I ALWAYS PUSHED MY REHAB CLIENTS TO GO FOR A HARD SKILL, DEGREED OR NOT.
