For what it’s worth

Subject: For what it’s worth

As some of you already know I live in the area of Dayton Ohio. Sadly a couple of weeks ago there was a mass shooting here in Dayton. These things have become so common that I’ve kind of wondered when it would happen in Dayton and now, sadly, I have that answer.
It happened in the downtown area called the, “Oregon District.” In the early ‘70’s a local effort began to rehab the area for historic reasons. Soon it became a popular area along a block of East Fifth street, with a number of watering holes for a number of tastes, from live music, dance, or just being seen.
There’s also the surrounding residential area that was given some rehab, some didn’t. As you might expect, there’s always been an element of residents there as well. The idiot that attacked people that night was not from there, but a better suburb of Dayton.
In 1989-90, I stopped going there because of not only the fight prone University of Dayton crowd, but more because of the murder of a work acquaintance. He was killed by a thief he caught who’d broken into his truck.
The Oregon District is still a very popular evening destination. Personally, I think the media blacks out crime in the District for monetary reasons. But I also think it’s probably somewhat safe. But there’s a reason there was a police presence that could respond so quickly. They’re there for a reason.
Ultimately, I still strongly support the second amendment. While I don’t prefer to own a gun, I believe in the rights given us in the Constitution.
I also believe that if the ENTIRE media, tv, print, etc., were to black out ALL glorification of the perpetrators of these crimes, they would be curtailed greatly.
These are just some thoughts I’ve had on this event and others. Thanks for taking the time to read them.
